The extensions split roughly by how much they try to do. Some sync your setup to the vendor's own servers, so it follows you between computers; the open source options mostly keep everything local to the browser unless you export it yourself. If a paid tier only unlocks a handful of extra widgets, check whether those are ones you would actually use before paying for a year up front.
Permissions are worth a look too, since a new tab extension runs on every tab you open. Each store listing states what it can read; a page asking for browsing history or access to all websites should be tied to a specific feature you turned on, not a blanket request.
