Who it suits
Anyone who wants their browser's home tab to do more than open a search box: a scannable list of links, live weather, maybe a note. It is the direct descendant of iGoogle, the customizable Google homepage Google shut down in 2013, and more than a decade later people still look for a replacement.
How to choose
The oldest and best-known options work the same broad way: a canvas of movable widgets you sign into and arrange yourself. Protopage and start.me both let you build private, shared or public pages; start.me's free tier caps you at a small number of pages and shows advertising, lifted on its paid Personal PRO plan. Symbaloo leans more toward a tile grid of bookmarks than live widgets, also free with ads unless you pay to remove them.
Simpler options exist too. Abunch and CentPage both add widgets on top of a bookmark organizer, while Best Homepage Ever stays deliberately close to shortcuts, a live weather tile and a changing background, with no account required.
The real trade-off is how much you want built in. A widget-heavy start page takes longer to set up but can replace a few other tabs outright. A bookmark-first one loads faster and asks less of you, but does less. If what you actually want is a page that opens automatically on every new tab rather than one you navigate to, see new tab extensions instead.
